European defense technology company Helsing has officially presented the CA-1 Europa, an autonomous uncrewed combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), at the facilities of its subsidiary Grob Aircraft SE in Tussenhausen. The unveiling was attended by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder, government representatives, industry leaders, and international media.
The CA-1 Europa is being developed in cooperation with partners from across the European aerospace ecosystem and is scheduled to enter production within the next four years. Development and testing are taking place at Grob Aircraft in Tussenhausen.
Helsing has combined its AI-based autonomy stack Centaur, which was demonstrated earlier this year with Saab on the Gripen fighter jet, with Grob Aircraft’s experience in designing and manufacturing aircraft in the three-to-five-ton class.
According to Helsing, the CA-1 Europa has been designed as a high-subsonic, multi-role combat platform optimized for scalability and attritability. It is capable of operating either as a single aircraft or in swarms and features an advanced software operating system for the integration of sensors, self-protection systems, and effectors.
During the unveiling, company leaders and political representatives highlighted both the technological and strategic importance of the program:
“Uncrewed fighter jets will become a key capability for establishing air dominance and keeping us safe. Europe cannot afford to fall behind in this category or become dependent on third parties. With CA-1 Europa, we will make sure this does not happen,” said Torsten Reil, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Helsing.
“The future of combat air lies in attritable systems, where software and artificial intelligence are the decisive technologies. That is why autonomy is at the very core of the CA-1 Europa,” explained Stephanie Lingemann, Senior Director Air Domain at Helsing.
“The sovereign development of an autonomous fighter jet is a great opportunity for Germany and Bavaria. With a focus on key technologies, we can establish a new hub for military aviation in Germany,” said Dr. Markus Söder, Minister President of Bavaria.
The CA-1 Europa is positioned as a flagship project for European technological sovereignty in defense and as a step toward establishing Europe’s future air power capabilities.
