On Monday, October 13, 2025, the Belgian Air Force will officially welcome its first F-35A Lightning II aircraft at Florennes Air Base, marking a historic milestone in Belgium’s transition to fifth-generation airpower and strengthening its role within NATO’s defense network.
According to the Belgian Ministry of Defence, the first four aircraft — serial numbers FL009 to FL012 — have completed testing and training in the United States and are now being delivered to Belgium. This delivery forms the foundation of Belgium’s future F-35 fleet, which will replace the nation’s aging F-16s.
The arrival ceremony at the 2nd Tactical Wing (2W Tac) includes the inauguration of newly built F-35 facilities and marks the beginning of a multi-year modernization program that will reshape Belgium’s defense capabilities. Belgium ordered 34 F-35A aircraft in 2018 as part of a $6.5 billion modernization program, with an option for additional units announced earlier this year.
Equipped with stealth, sensor fusion, and networked warfare technologies, the F-35A provides unmatched situational awareness and survivability. The aircraft will initially be operated by the 1st Squadron “Stingers” at Florennes, with future deployments planned for Kleine-Brogel Air Base.
“Today’s arrival of the F-35 marks a decisive leap forward for Belgium’s defense and technological ambitions,” said Defence Minister Ludivine Dedonder. “This milestone ensures that our air force remains ready to protect Belgian and European airspace for decades to come.”
Full operational capability is expected by 2027, with pilot conversion training already underway.
The introduction of the F-35A fleet represents more than just a platform upgrade — it symbolizes a new era of European interoperability, innovation, and strategic readiness.
