THE EVOLUTION OF EXCELLENCE: TPX COBRA – POWER, VERSATILITY, AND SUPERIOR PRECISION

In the rapidly evolving world of military aviation, reliability and cutting-edge technology are crucial. The TPX Cobra is here to redefine the playing field, combining a rich legacy with the innovative spirit of French aerospace development. From its civilian origins to its transformation into a military training aircraft, the TPX Cobra embodies what happens when passion meets precision.

FROM CIVILIAN TRAINER TO MILITARY POWERHOUSE

In 2018, H3 Grob Aircraft SE had the idea of creating a new airframe capable of handling basic and advanced training emerged. This ambitious concept materialized into a new aircraft designed for military training, providing unparalleled capabilities. The TPX was born from this initiative, focusing exclusively on training applications.

DEVELOPMENT IN FRANCE: THE BIRTH OF THE TPX COBRA

GAF Aerospace, an independent French enterprise (Société par actions simplifiée unipersonnelle or “SASU”), based in Jonzac, Charente-Maritime, took on the task of developing the aircraft. This led to the creation of the TPX Cobra, a military training platform developed exclusively in France.

GAF Aerospace in Jonzac took the TPX concept and transformed it into the TPX Cobra. This transformation was not just an upgrade; it was a complete metamorphosis. The civilian trainer evolved into a military marvel, ready to undertake any training mission.

TPX COBRA: MILITARY TRAINING AIRCRAFT

The TPX Cobra is designed for basic and advanced military pilot training. This lightweight, robust aircraft is capable of enduring at least 15,000 flight hours and provides top-tier training for transport and fighter pilots. The TPX Cobra is a low-wing, side-by-side, two-seater monoplane powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-25C turboprop engine and equipped with two Martin-Baker ejection seats. It will be certified for VFR and IFR flights, day and night, in non-icing conditions.

ADVANCED COCKPIT AND SYSTEMS

The cockpit of the TPX Cobra is built around the EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System) from Genesys. The display area measures 6″ × 8″ (10.4″ diagonal) in portrait orientation. Each screen has its own internal processor and communicates with the others while remaining independent.

COMPREHENSIVE SIMULATION AND TRAINING SOLUTIONS

Training simulator is as close to real flight as it gets. The simulator offers a realistic replica of the TPX Cobra cockpit, including avionics and controls, and allows for immersive training experiences with augmented reality headsets.

SIMPLIFIED SIMULATOR

The simplified simulator uses new augmented reality headsets, providing perfect immersion without the need for extensive projection systems. This mixed-reality helmet (virtual in a real cabin) enables basic flight training, aerobatics, type conversion, and tactical flight maneuvers.

MISSION PREPARATION AND REPORTING SYSTEM (MPRS)

The MPRS is an advanced mission support system that includes ground-based mission planning, replay, and debriefing. A tablet with flight preparation data can be taken in-flight, and the same workstation can be used for debriefing by transferring data from onboard media.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND POTENTIAL

The development of the TPX Cobra is just the beginning. As it undergoes CS23 certification in Jonzac, its future looks bright. GAF Aerospace aims to meet the needs of the French Air Force and is preparing for international export. The TPX Cobra highlights its potential to fulfill a wide range of military training requirements.

The size of the TPX surpasses other trainers like the TB30 Epsilon, Grob 120TP, and Pilatus PC21. The high cabin and large bubble canopy provide exceptional 360-degree visibility, unobstructed by roll bars. The black livery underscores the aircraft’s all-composite construction, and the precision assembly of the composite materials highlights decades of engineering mastery.

During a photo flight mission, test pilot Damien Dufour noted the effortless access to the cockpit via the electric opening, akin to the F16 canopy. The spacious cabin and adjustable settings ensure an optimal piloting position. The dashboard, equipped with four 10″ Genesys screens, displays critical flight information within minutes of startup.

He states, “These aircraft offer lower operational costs and are easier to produce. They don’t serve in high-intensity conflicts but are valuable in various operational zones. For military pilot training, they significantly reduce flight hour costs.” Lanata also emphasizes the initiative’s role in enhancing international relations: “We can establish training collaborations with countries we previously had fewer ties with, sharing the same aircraft models. This approach can lead to enhanced diplomatic relationships and mutual support.”

Lanata, a distinguished military leader with a career that began at the École de l’air in 1981, has held numerous key positions within the French Air Force. His experience includes commanding reconnaissance squadrons, serving in various strategic roles, and ultimately becoming the Chief of Staff of the French Air Force. As of September 11, 2018, he has served as the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, a critical NATO position focusing on transforming allied military capabilities.

THE FLYING EXPERIENCE: INSIGHTS FROM TEST PILOT DAMIEN DUFOUR

The opportunity to fly an experimental aircraft is rare and highly valued. According to Damien Dufour, test pilot from GAF Aerospace, the TPX is an extraordinary aircraft with impeccable design. The first thing that stands out is its perfect proportions and sleek lines, reminiscent of Marcel Dassault’s philosophy that a beautiful plane flies well.

Damien’s experience highlights the TPX’s versatility and potential as a training platform. The aircraft’s stability, combined with its advanced systems, make it an exceptional tool for preparing future combat pilots of advanced aircraft like the Rafale, A400M, and Caracal.
