On September 26th, Safran Helicopter Engines reached an important milestone as China’s Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) granted a validated type certificate (VTC) for the Arrano 1A engine. This achievement marks Safran’s second VTC in China this year, following the certification of the Aneto-1K engine in May. With the Arrano 1A now certified in China, Safran strengthens its foothold in the Chinese aviation market and supports the local entry of Airbus Helicopters’ H160, which relies exclusively on this advanced, medium-segment engine.
The Arrano 1A, a 1,300 shp engine, represents Safran’s latest generation of helicopter engines, offering enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and improved pilot handling. Notably, the engine’s design introduces a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to other engines in its class, achieved through a modern digital control system and a 3D-printed combustion chamber. This advanced combustion chamber, equipped with fuel injectors produced via additive manufacturing, supports seamless engine starts across varying altitudes and weather conditions, enhancing operational reliability for missions such as Oil & Gas, EMS, and private or business aviation.
Safran’s commitment to sustainable aviation is further reinforced by the Arrano 1A’s compatibility with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at up to 50%, mirroring the brand’s ongoing sustainability efforts across its entire engine portfolio. This feature not only aligns with China’s expanding focus on greener aviation but also bolsters the engine’s appeal among a new generation of operators in China’s aviation market.
Marc Delort, General Manager of Safran Helicopter Engines, highlighted the significance of this certification for the H160’s prospects in China: “The certification of the Arrano 1A in China shows Safran Helicopter Engines’ full commitment to a fast entry into service of the H160 in the local market. Benefiting from a strong footprint in China, our team will provide the best support services for the operation of this engine to GDAT, the H160 helicopter launch customer in China, and to all future operators.”
Already certified in Europe, the United States, Brazil, and numerous other markets, the Arrano 1A’s new Chinese certification sets the stage for the Airbus H160’s anticipated entry into the Chinese helicopter sector, providing an efficient and adaptable platform for the country’s diverse aviation needs. This latest milestone not only strengthens Safran’s presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets but also underscores the engine’s adaptability and competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market.
