Airbus has completed the acquisition of French cybersecurity company Quarkslab, strengthening its sovereign cyber capabilities across defence, aerospace and space.

The transaction adds around 100 cybersecurity specialists to Airbus Defence and Space and expands the group’s capabilities in areas including software protection, reverse engineering, vulnerability research and defence against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

For Airbus, the acquisition is part of a broader strategy rather than a standalone deal.

Airbus is building a pan-European cyber portfolio

Over the past several years, Airbus Defence and Space has steadily expanded its cybersecurity footprint through a series of targeted acquisitions.

These include German cybersecurity specialist INFODAS and UK-based Ultra Cyber, with Quarkslab now adding a significant French capability.

Together, the acquisitions give Airbus a broader European base in secure communications, cyber defence, software protection and classified systems.

That matters increasingly as military aircraft, satellites, command-and-control networks and autonomous systems become more software-defined and interconnected.

Why Quarkslab is strategically relevant

Quarkslab specialises in advanced cybersecurity research and software protection.

Its work includes reverse engineering, vulnerability analysis, malware research and technologies designed to protect software against manipulation or exploitation.

The company also develops capabilities intended to defend software against increasingly automated and AI-enabled attacks.

For Airbus, these technologies are directly relevant to future aerospace and defence systems, where software assurance is becoming as critical as physical platform protection.

Cybersecurity is becoming an aerospace requirement

The aerospace industry is increasingly dependent on highly connected digital architectures.

Modern military aircraft, satellites, unmanned systems and ground networks exchange large volumes of operational data and increasingly rely on software-defined functions.

This creates opportunities for greater capability and faster upgrades, but also increases exposure to cyber threats.

For major defence primes, cybersecurity is therefore becoming less of a separate IT service and more of an integral part of platform design.

Airbus’ latest acquisition reflects that shift.

European sovereignty remains central

The transaction also fits into a broader European debate around technological sovereignty.

Governments increasingly want critical defence, cyber and space capabilities to remain under European control, particularly in areas involving classified data, secure communications and national-security infrastructure.

By combining capabilities in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, Airbus is positioning itself as one of Europe’s largest integrated providers of sovereign cyber solutions for defence and space customers.

The acquisition of Quarkslab therefore represents more than an expansion of Airbus’ cybersecurity business.

It is another step toward integrating cyber protection directly into the next generation of European aerospace and defence systems.
