RTX, through its business Collins Aerospace, has been awarded a $438 million contract by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to support the Radar System Replacement (RSR) program—one of the cornerstones of the modernization of the U.S. National Airspace System (NAS).

The program forms a key part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s initiative to deliver a brand-new air traffic control system, aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and resilience across the nation’s airspace.

Under the contract, Collins Aerospace will deliver next-generation cooperative and non-cooperative surveillance radar systems, replacing multiple legacy radars with a unified, adaptable, and cost-effective architecture. The new systems will provide air traffic controllers with secure, reliable, and precise situational awareness, particularly in low-altitude environments.

“As a trusted supplier to the FAA for more than 70 years, Collins is ready to rapidly deploy next-generation radar systems that replace outdated technology with a single, modern and interoperable solution,” said Nate Boelkins, President of Avionics at Collins Aerospace. “These systems enhance safety and efficiency, reduce long-term costs, and prepare the National Airspace System for the future.”

Proven Technology, Ready for Deployment

The radar suite includes:

  • Condor Mk3 – a cooperative surveillance radar communicating directly with aircraft transponders

  • ASR-XM – a non-cooperative radar detecting aircraft via reflected signals

Both systems have already met FAA surveillance requirements through prior certification and testing. Today, more than 550 RTX radar systems are already operational across the U.S. national airspace, providing a strong foundation for large-scale modernization.

This contract further reinforces RTX’s role as a strategic technology partner in the transformation of global air traffic management infrastructure.
