German defence group Rheinmetall has entered discussions with satellite manufacturer OHB regarding the development of a low-Earth-orbit satellite communications network for the German armed forces. The concept mirrors commercial satellite constellations but would be designed specifically for secure military use.
The talks are still at an early stage, but their significance lies in the strategic shift they represent. European governments are increasingly reluctant to rely on non-European satellite infrastructure for sensitive military communications, particularly in crisis scenarios.
For Rheinmetall, the project would mark a deeper move into space-based defence capabilities, complementing its traditional land systems portfolio. For OHB, it would elevate the company from a component supplier to a strategic systems provider with recurring service potential.
Market reaction was swift, with OHB shares rising sharply following reports of the discussions. Investors appear to be pricing in the possibility of a long-term, state-backed program with high barriers to entry and predictable funding.
