Airbus Advances European Uncrewed Combat Aircraft with Valkyrie Integration

Airbus is accelerating development of a European Uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (UCCA) capability, aiming to deliver an operational system for the German Air Force by 2029. As part of this effort, the company is preparing two Kratos XQ-58A Valkyrie unmanned aircraft for their first flight equipped with a sovereign European mission system.

The aircraft are currently being integrated at Airbus facilities in Manching, Germany, with maiden flights scheduled for later in 2026. The initiative marks a significant step in Europe’s efforts to rapidly field advanced uncrewed combat capabilities while maintaining technological sovereignty.

At the core of the programme is Airbus’ Multiplatform Autonomous Reconfigurable and Secure (MARS) mission system. This includes the AI-enabled “MindShare” software, designed to replace onboard pilot functions and coordinate complex mission groups across both manned and unmanned platforms. The system enables distributed decision-making and collaborative operations in high-threat environments.

By combining the flight-proven Valkyrie platform with a European-developed mission system, Airbus and its U.S. partner Kratos aim to deliver a cost-effective and rapidly deployable solution. The approach avoids the need for developing a new airframe from scratch, significantly reducing time and cost while ensuring operational relevance.

The Valkyrie, first flown in 2019, is a low-cost, high-performance unmanned combat aircraft with a range exceeding 5,000 km, a ceiling of 45,000 feet, and a maximum take-off weight of approximately three tonnes. It is designed to operate autonomously, in coordinated swarms, or in manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) scenarios.

In parallel, Airbus is enhancing the Eurofighter’s role as a command platform. In cooperation with Rafael, the Litening 5 targeting pod is being upgraded with advanced connectivity features, enabling cross-platform coordination with uncrewed systems. These upgrades, combined with minor avionics enhancements, are expected to significantly increase the Eurofighter’s combat effectiveness.

The UCCA concept reflects a broader shift toward “affordable mass” in modern air warfare—deploying larger numbers of lower-cost, networked systems to complement high-end manned platforms. Within this framework, the Valkyrie-based system is designed to perform both kinetic and non-kinetic missions, including high-risk operations unsuitable for crewed aircraft.

The programme underscores Europe’s growing focus on autonomous systems and collaborative combat architectures as key elements of future air power.
